Bra Adjustments

Bodies inevitably change over time, making bras that once fit perfectly no longer sit on the body quite right. Whether it's an issue with the band or the cup, there are ways to make the adjustments yourself. Cloth Habit has fantastic visual guides in their "Bra-making Sew Along" series of blog posts that show us exactly how to go about adjusting bras.

Be Your Own Bra Fitter

You already know how important it is to wear a well-fitting bra in the correct size. If you haven't gone to see a bra fitter and don't have plans to go any time soon, then consider taking a moment to measure yourself! You'll be glad that you did.
Good Housekeeping has a brief bra fitting guide here: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/beauty/fashion/best-bra-guide-0800

Taking Your Measure
Not only will a properly fitted bra feel more comfortable, but it will make your clothes fit and look better. First step: Learn how to do the math, so you can figure out your own dimensions.
1. Stand straight and relax. Don't inhale and expand your rib cage as if you're about to blow out candles.
2. Using a soft tape measure, measure all the way around your body, placing the tape measure right beneath your breasts (example: 30 1/2). Add five to that number, rounding up if necessary to the next even number (36). Congratulations: That's your band size.
3. Next step: The cup. While wearing a bra, measure completely around the fullest part of your bust (across the nipple) without pulling tight. Make sure the tape measure goes around your entire back (38).
4. Subtract the number from your band size (38-36=2). The result will indicate your appropriate cup size, based on the following guide:
0=AA  1=A  2=B  3=C  4=D  5=DD  6=DDD

Wearing the wrong bra can impact your physical health!

Making sure you're wearing a bra that fits just right is about much more than accentuating your figure. Poor fit can have a harmful bearing on a woman's psychology and health, just as it does on her silhouette. Constantly wearing the wrong size and suffering from the discomfort and pain of it over time can actually cause permanent health issues. Bad bras tends to ruin a woman's posture, causing damage to the muscles in her chest and back. If it doesn't provide enough support, it can cause pain in the breasts or chafe skin.

Want to know more about the harm of wearing an ill-fitting bra? Million Looks has more information.

Bra Bulge - Too Tight?

We all hate the unsightly back bulge caused by bras that don't fit quite right. Think it's because it fits too snugly? That's likely not the case.
Read Is My Bra Too Tight? on RealSimple.com.

Q: I always look like I have back fat. Is my bra too tight?

A: No, it’s actually too loose. A properly fitting bra is the key to a smooth back. Here are three strategies to prevent bra-induced bulge:

Make sure the band fits snugly (you should be able to slide only one finger underneath it) and sits low under your shoulder blades. “When the band is too large, the bra rides up in the back, which creates a roll,” says Lauren Amerine, a co-owner of Isabella Fine Lingerie, in Chicago. (Remember: The band should fit perfectly on the loosest hook, since the bra will inevitably stretch out.)

Look for a bra with a band that is wide under the arms and across the back to help hold in soft flesh (the closure should have a row of two or three hooks, not one hook).
